Closing of Microsoft Newsgroups

Beginning in June 2010, Microsoft will begin closing newsgroups and migrating users to Microsoft forums that include Microsoft Answers, TechNet and MSDN. This move will centralize content, make it easier for contributors to retain their influence, reduce redundancies and make content easier to find. Overall, forums offer a better spam management platform that will improve customer satisfaction by encouraging a healthy discussion space.

Note that this WILL apply to the Microsoft Money newsgroups.

Nationwide withdrawing support for Microsoft Money

The last full UK release of Microsoft Money was in 2005. Since then, Microsoft have carried out no development work on the software. In addition, Microsoft no longer offer any technical support on this product in the UK and this has significantly impacted on our ability to resolve customer queries relating to the software. Regrettably, we will be withdrawing the support service on our Internet Bank for Microsoft Money management software on 22 October 2009.

Remember you can still use our Internet banking service to view your statements, opt out of paper statements, pay bills and transfer your money instantly. You can also view and manage your credit card, mortgage and overdraft.

Implications of the discontinuation

There are a lot of implications regarding the discontinuation of Microsoft Money. Such as 'what happens next', 'upgrade paths' etc.

Some FAQ's can be found on the moneymvps.org website:

In addition to these, a number of other questions or comments will be unclear. Above all, remember that even though the product may be discontinued, you can still use it. In January 2011, aggregated bank downloads and quotes are likely to be turned off, but most other features should continue to work.

Money 2005 patch download available again

The Money 2005 Service Outage as reported earlier in the week is now fixed.

I received an email around 11pm BST (22:00 GMT) last night informing me. I've also heard from a couple of people confirming this is the case.

If you've been stuck at version 730, you should now try and restart Money and let the download occur. Once done, you may wish to consider making a CD as detailed in FAQ Article 630, BUT make sure you test it if you do!!!.

Thanks for all the comments and questions during the outage. It made the page reporting the problem one of my busiest ever.

PC Pro reports on the ditching of support for UK Money 2005

ON the PC Pro website, there is an article about the ditching of support for Money 2005.

Microsoft has dropped support for Money 2005 and described it as "obsolete" - even though the company claims it's still good enough for UK users.
In our online banking feature in this month's PC Pro we described "Money as a little unloved at Microsoft" after the company failed to issue a new UK version in three years, despite a US release just last year.

Some points to raise regarding this article:
  • It is still possible to buy Money 2005 from Amazon.co.uk
  • The product lifecycle (referenced in this article), puts the end of life for Money 2005 at 8 January 2008. This might be where the article is coming from as Microsoft probably use this date in the UK also. I blogged this back in January (End of Support for Money 2005).
  • Online services relating to download (see Article 306) originally expired on 1 September 2007. However, the MSN Money website showed a new date of 31 December 2009. The page is still active.
  • If all else looks lost, you can get hold of US versions in the UK by digital download (see this article).

End of Support for Money 2005

According to the support lifecycle for Money 2005 (see this page), support ended for Money 2005 yesterday, January 8 2008.

It isn't clear from the lifecycle whether this is all regions, but I would expect so.

Note that quote downloads for Money 2005 for UK users should continue until December 31 2009, as stated on the Money UK Pages
