Updating Money 2005 - Service Outage

I've been informed that currently upgrading Money 2005 from its 'out of the box' version to the patched version (from version 14.0.x.0730 to version 14.0.x.1105) is currently experiencing problems, and so these upgrades don't currently work.

Microsoft is working on the problem. In the meantime you'll probably not be able to open your Money file if you've just done a clean install and need to use an existing file.

As far as I know, it is affecting all regions.

Update: 14 May - I'm hearing that the fix should be ready later in the week, however this is not guaranteed.

16 May: Hearing this morning that things seem to be working again

Why can't Microsoft supply a download link so we can download the update to our computers and when we have to re-install money we can just run the file. Makes more sense....

Hi! Thanks for the info! I have been madly trying to sort out the patch for Money 2005 for the last two days after a freash install, thinking that it must be my network settings or something preventing the upgrade, or even MS discontinuing support! Where did you get the info, and do you know when the problem will be solved?

Glyn Simpson said...

Anonymous: One of the other MVP's commented on this recently in a newsgroup. His comment was "The reason they won't is that M2005 is way out of support and there is no
business case/budget for any development work."
It would be nice, but unless they have an easy mechanism to do it, I guess they have their reasons why not.

Ben.a.shaw: The information came directly from microsoft support. Unfortunately I have no ETA, but given the team is located in Redmond, unless they're working all night tonight, I wouldn't expect anything until this afternoon at earliest. As soon as I know, I'll update the post (time permitting).

Hey, Microsoft, please help up !
I'm stuck with my business management !

WE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM IN FRANCE

WE HOPE MICROSOFT WILL GIVE US A SOLUTION BECAUSE WE WILL NOT HAVE NEW VERSIONS OF MONEY IN OUR COUNTRY

Anonymous said...

I am also having the same problem, but without any errors, Just got a new HP laptop with vista 64bit, installed money 2005 no probs but it wont open my existing money file,, Last time i reinstalled it prompted me to install an update and no it is not doing anything, hope they fix this soon, use money soooo much

Anonymous said...

It may be 'way out of support', but in some countries (ie Australia) this is the latest version available to us!

Anonymous said...

I know I'm a corner case, but I just installed Money 2005 on Windows 7 RC, and I've found that I can't open an old Money file of mine. Here's hoping they get this update back online soon; I'd hate to not be able to get to my old financial data.

Unknown said...

Come on Microsoft... man up and support your user base, this is very unprofessional move.

Anonymous said...

Same issue and question as everyone else in post. Have MS given any indication when issue is likely to be reolved or is it just wait and see?

garibaldi said...

I agree that Microsoft has to supply a download link so we can download the update to Windows 7 RC

Anonymous said...

Can someone please sort out Microsoft Please.

I have just installed Windows 7 to provie them with with feedback on their new OS, so the least they can do is support us on their older software that we have purchased.

Windows 7 aero is as vista should of been.

Glyn Simpson said...

Unfortunately I don't have an ETA, but will try see if one is forthcoming.

Anybody know if we can somehow 'save' the update? Unless we want to be locked out of our data someday (when they permanently 'misplace' the update), it seems grabbing that update somehow is the only way to make sure any future reinstalls will not either lock us out, or force an upgrade.

Unknown said...

Hi Glyn,

Thanks for the update on MS situation.

I guess, reading you blog,; MS will have to balance somehow, between putting back MSMONEY update and selling some W7 more. In my case, I'am not going to revoke 5 years or more of Money history against W7 when I have no problem whatsoever with Vista...

I'll try the Money update again in one or two days....

Thanks again, and good luck.

Anonymous - I just found a way of 'saving' it, although it is really burning a version to CD which has the patch integrated into it.

You'll need the original source and a working copy of Money 2005 to do this.

See FAQ Article 630 on my main website.

Would be interested in any reports of whether this works.

Worked for me, thanks a lot

I just tried the technique above. It seems to work ok. I had a backup image of my laptop before I reinstalled xp, so I had access to the '1105' version in the program files folder. Uninstalled Money, followed instructions, installed Money, opens my data file ok and shows as 1105 version.

Thanks!

ben.a.shaw said...

That fix works! Thank you so much! I just could not wait for Microsoft to fix it! If anyone needs any help with the files that need to be replaced for the International Edition just ask. Happy to assist.

Glyn,
Thanks for FAQ Article 630!
It works !!!

Anonymous said...

Many thanks for the fix ! I managed to mount my Vista backup file using the VHDMount utility (installed with virtual server 2005) to copy the patched files.

Excellent !

Hi there regarding this work around. It didn't work for me. I have another laptop with the updated version of money installed and I have a copy of the original files from the cd. I created a new folder, copied the contents of the original files into it then copied the MNYCorefiles folder and contents from the patched version into my new folder then ran the setup but when I double clicked on my money file, it asked me to convert it then it errored. Not sure if this is of any significance but my original files from the cd don't contain a MNYCorefiles folder so when I copy the updated version of MNYCorefiles to the new folder it doesn't ask me to replace files as stated in the original fix post. Hope somebody canb help.

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi

the CD will contain the MNYCoreFiles, but it's in a hidden folder. It might be a system protected folder too, so you may also need to uncheck the box 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)' to see the folder.

For those with a working copy, this is great...

...for those without a working copy, but only the original CD, this isn't.

Any thoughts of the approach to take? Can the updated files be distributed? Who should we contact at Microsoft?

I'm sure this has left thousands of non-US users without access to existing Money files, following updating to Windows Vista / 7 RC???

Help!?

Anonymous said...

Glyn, thanks for that but again, no MNYCorefiles folder on the cd. I had already checked show hidden files and folders and unchecked hIde protected os files and double checked this but there is definitely no MNYCorefiles folder on this CD and it is an original. Once installed, the version states 14.0.120.730 and still not able to open money file :-(

Anonymous said...

I have done what you said but can not find "mnycorefiles" on the original CD

Glyn Simpson said...

I do not believe you can legally distribute the files. However, I am sure the service will be up again soon.

Glyn Simpson said...

You're right about the MNYCoreFiles folder, just got access to a copy of the CD myself, and it's not one of the folders on there...my mistake.

The fact that it tried to convert your file earlier though is good. Try creating a new file and then checking the version number. If you can create a new file, then you can establish which version has actually installed.

Anonymous said...

I couldnt see the "MNYcorefiles" folder on the CD as well so I copied the files in "mnycorefiles" folder from my other PC to the "Money" folder on the CD. Ensure you overwrite the files in the "Money" folder. Then run the installation and all is fine.

Im using an OEM version of Microsoft Works UK that includes Money if it matters.

Anonymous said...

Just created a new fie and the versions are still the same. Looks like I'll just have to wait...

SamKerby said...

This is my last straw with MS and their Money software, I've been an honest customer since the first money and tell everyone to use it, have set it up for lots of folks, but I'm tired of it. Time to find a freeware, open source finance software that I can start a new data base on. Anyone have any suggestions?

Anonymous said...

Hello, I did it and it's working just fine. just follow the instructions exactly how to create a new disc with the update & when installed, you will have the Money 2005 patched with the new version. Good luck.

Hi, I tried this but was unable to find MnyCore files either in "OK" version or 2005 cd.

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi

I realised this based on another comment. Someone a few posts up said:

I couldnt see the "MNYcorefiles" folder on the CD as well so I copied the files in "mnycorefiles" folder from my other PC to the "Money" folder on the CD. which appeared to work for them. Assuming this is the case, I'll clarify the instructions a little.

I tried the original fix but made no difference and again, the MNYCorefiles was not on CD then I tried the other fix mentioned later on but all I get this time is errors when starting money. Can't understand why this would work for some people and not for others. Surely if somebody is using the same OS and Money version then the fix should work. I am using Original Money 2005 and windows Vista SP1 and cannot get any of the fixes to work.

Anonymous said...

Hi, It works fine for me on a french version.

It is said that you have to copy the content of the folder MNYCorefiles located in your program file folder on your computer in the folder Money contained on the original CD.

So, to clarified, there is no folder MNYCorefiles on the CD, it is called Money.

Mike said...

Hi again, further to looking for MnyCoreFiles. I was able to find them on "OK" version by unchecking "hide protected o.s. files" (don't forget to re check this)however as I was unable to find the file on the cd I am no better off--STILL NO JOY any sign of Microsoft getting the service back on line.

Nico said...

Still no upgrade here in France. It's such a shame for Microsoft. There's no reason why the update is not available for direct download... Thanks for the information and your efforts to keep us informed.

Ade said...

I have just created a copy of the CD including the 1105 patch as described by copying the MNYcoreFiles files from a friends working copy. All is now reinstalled and OK. Thank you

Skippi said...

Still no upgrade here in France!! After a clean install, I've been trying to get my accounts information back for two days and I just discovered your blog (thanks) !! Why microsoft is not giving us a simple link for download as for other upgrades ?! :-(

Mike said...

Hi,

I finally cracked it using the info on these posts. THANK YOU ALL.

Anonymous said...

Looks like it's back up and working. Well, at least in the UK.

Skippi said...

[Update from France] The online, automatic update of Money 2005 from Microsoft is back online. It just installed when I tried again just before giving up for the day. My accounts are back! Enjoy :-)

rickyd said...

Now update is working again - have created a replacement install CD using instructions.
This worked excellently.

Only minor change to instructions:

- where it says copy MnyCOREFiles to MnyCOREFiles, you need to actually copy MnyCOREFiles to the Money folder.

Yeah - I've not lost my data!

Anonymous said...

i've tried to upgrade my money 2005but it doesn't work for me.
how do you upgrade your money 2005 version ?
thank you for your help

Anonymous said...

I've just created the CD as described because I was worried that when I do a clean install of Windows 7 I wouldn't be able to get the update. It worked a treat. I've just reinstalled it on Windows 7 RC1 and it installed with no problems. Guess it'll be another 8-10 years now before I have to worry about what I am going to use instead of Money, as it works fine on windows 7

The money update patch lives on a Microsoft download centre server:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/D/6/6D6E3AD4-D316-4AC2-B414-170204F95122/aubits/uk/ms/manifest.cab

Work out the connection between the files in the manifest's XML file and their path on the server and you can manually download the patch.

Unknown said...

This was a blessing! Thank you soo much for people like you :)

Unknown said...

Way to go! This works!!! I wonder if new updates comes out on money....it will be able to update it. Thank you ....if it wasn't for smart people like you...i'll be lost!

Hi Folks,

I've tried to upgrade 14.0.120.730 to 14.0.120.1105 , and it seems that update isn't available again. :(

I would appreciate your help, I run MS Money 2005 French, and i'm searching MnyCoreFiles.

Thanks in advance,

Alex

Hi Alex

can you explain the issue you have, along with error messages etc?

I don't see why Microsoft are so reluctant to provide a download link for the v1105 update. After all, Money 2005 downloads it every time we do a clean install, so what is the difference, really! It also shows that, indirectly, Microsoft ARE supporting it still, sort of!
Is anyone clever enough to "examine" their PC as the "update" occurs to see where it's downloaded from?
I have created the aforementioned CD, with the v1105 update in place, and it works perfectly.
I must admit, however, that I would to update with an executable download!
We have just 2 months until their servers are switched off, so please everyone, get this disc created for your own benefit before it's too late!

Hello, I have a huge problem because I need to upgrade my Money 2005 Fr (due to a PC crash) to be compatible with my personal mny file but the download site from MS is unavailable. Is there someone that can give me the last update or a zip of MNYCoreFiles ? Please, all my personal accounts are in this money file !

Dave Pusey said...

Just installed Money 2005 on my laptop, but couldn't open my file as it needed the 1105 patch.

The instructions at http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/630.aspx worked perfectly.

Massive thanks.

azadh said...

looks like tI found this article too late! I updated my XP to Win7 and re-installed Money 2005(UK) only to find out it does not open my data file, I assume it is due to the patch which cannot be downloaded any more, is there any chance that you could upload your CD image to my dropbox so i can re-install? Thanks.

Glyn Simpson said...

Sorry, I cannot share my image, even though the product is obsolete, licensing terms still apply.

However, I've tried the update again today and it is still available, so it's not yet too late.

If you've reinstalled, perhaps it's trying to pick up the 'upgraded' file - if so, create a new file and see if you can get the download to kick off.

Andy Sinclair said...

Well, this is a complete disaster for me: my hard drive has just crashed and killed my machine.

I've reinstalled MS money on another machine, but my years and years of data which I carefully backed up out of MS money will not load due to this 1105 patch problem.

As a UK user, seeing that a sunset version has not been made available for us, I think MS should really continue to supply the patch. Any chance of lobbying them do you think?!

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Andy

unfortunately, no possibility of lobbying now. However, if the auto-update is not working (you'd want to create a new file and see if Money automatically updates itself before going back to your current file), then contact me offline (see the bottom of my website for some contact details) and I'll see if I can help you in other ways.

If you do manage to get the update working, please see this page on what you should do to avoid the issue in future.
