Microsoft Money on Windows 7

I recently put Windows 7 in a virtual machine, and installed Money 2005 on it. I am pleased to say that it all seemed to work successfully. However, it was just Money 2005 (plus the patch) on a 32 bit version of Windows, and I've not tried any other versions.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has tested other versions of Money, and whether they have had success or failure with them.

As far as I see, Windows 7 operates in the same way as Vista does with Microsoft Money. If this is the case, then all versions of Money should be okay.

Glyn

PS. Thanks for all the well wishers regarding my job situation. I'm pleased to say that I start a new one on Monday 2nd February :-)

Glynn,

Just read the ongoing debate re: UK Versions of Money. I guess the obvious question is are we ever going to see another UK version? I am currently using Money v12.0 in the Uk and need to step up to do tax returns etc. so would appreciate kjnowing if I should move away from MS onto a product that will have a UK timeline. Any thoughts?

Glyn Simpson said...

No idea whether MS will release another UK version. My own hunch is that they won't. After 4 years on Money 2005, I guess it'll remain that way.

So long as you can track your spending in Money 12 (Money 2004), and export the data into something like Excel, I think you could carry on using that version without having to change.

if you've got a small business there's always Microsoft Office Accounting 2008, which I think is free. However, that's not really designed for personal finance.

I installed Windows 7 on 32 bit machine and I am getting an error. "Money was unable to load the registration library (dll)."

Any ideas?

Glyn Simpson said...

It perhaps depends on the way you did it - was it an installation over a previous version of Windows? If so, I'd recommend uninstalling and reinstalling Money.

Which version of Money?

Installed Money Plus 2009 on Windows 7 Build 7048 x64. Installed with no problems and on initial run it requested to update. Completed the update with no problem. Then when attempted to run the program it looks like it is going to open, the splash screen appears and then the program exits immediately. Attempted to run it in Vista SP1 and XP SP3 compatibility mode but that didn't do anything. Program simply won't run. Have not found a work around. Feedback was submitted.

I've been using Money 2007 Home and Business for a few months on Windows 7. Everything seems to work okay except for the tax estimator section. Every time I click on "Tax Summary" Money crashes. I haven't found a fix as of late.

Anyone else had this issue?

just installed the money 2005 on a new pc and the problem is that it wont auto update from v14.0.120.805 to the latest 14.0.120.1105
Problem is that if i dont update to 1105 i cant restore my backup(which was performed with 14.0.120.1105 and needs to be restored from the same version) :/
Any clues?

Hi Bill, don't know if you're using Windows 7, however, the steps are the same. I'd start Money as an administrator (right click on the item on the Start Menu and select the 'run as administrator' option). Then create a new file. Money should then prompt to download the update, and when done so (by checking the version number), you will be able to open the Money 2005 file.

Hi Guy

the issue with you could be the same as bill, although given you posted your message on 12th May, it is also possible that you're running into this problem which is stopping the 2005 download.

For anyone else who was running into this problem, it looks like they have resolved the issue in the WIndows 7 Release Candidate.

Hi there. I have been running Money 2002 for some years on a PC which has now crashed terminally. I have installed the program, from the original disc, on the laptop I am now using which runs on Vista. The program looks all right but when I try to open the saved file with all my data it asks for a password which the file never had (at least I never put one on and was never asked for one on the old machine). The obvious device of just hitting return when I get the password prompt doesn't work. Grateful for any suggestions.

Ian J

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Ian

usually when Money asks for a password, it means the file is a file from a later version of MOney to the one installed. Definitely got the correct version installed?

Unknown said...

Hi Glyn and thanks for the speedy response. But I don't think that's it. Having searched my memory I am sure that the 2002 disc is the last one I had, so unless it's somehow updated itself on line (I certainly haven't bought any upgrades) it's the version in which the file was written. There's a lot of data in there so I'd be grateful for any further ideas!

Thanks

Hi again Glyn, and sorry, you were spot on. I'd installed Money 10 having forgotten that I'd subsequently got Money 11 (2003) with a later computer. When I found the later disc and installed Money 11 it was fine (phew!) Thanks for pointing me in the right direction and sorry to have been slow to take it.

Money 2003 runs perfectly on Windows 7 RC 7100 32 bit.
I am about to go to the 64 bit final version, rather nervously.
As i do not use Money for for tax reporting I have not needed to update, so cannot comment on that.
Will report on the 64bit issue in 2-3 weeks when up and running.

I've just moved over to Windows 7 x64 and am a Money 2005 user. The programme works most of the time but occasionaly I enter some transactions then the next time I open money the latest transactions have vanished. However the backup i created restores the missing transactions.
Anyone got any idea what's going on?

Glyn Simpson said...

I'd first try a repair on the file, as corruption could be causing the issue.

DooGie said...

Thanks for the reply Glyn. I ran a repair on the file but the log reported no issues with it.
However I may have solved the problem. I've started running the programme as administrator and up to now everything is as it should be.
Whether this is a solution remains to be seen as it's early days yet.

As an aside I had the same problem when running Vista x64.

Each time I start Money it attempts to get me to start a new account etc. So each time I have to say "no" and then go to File/Open to search for my backed up Money file. I have tried setting the Options to "open at last used" and it still wants to start over! Any ideas?

You may need to run it in compatibility mode. Right click on the shortcut, select 'properties' and choose the compatibility tab. Select the 'Windows XP with SP3' option.

I have MS Money 2007 running on Windows 7. I have two files. Mine & my son's. Mine works fine. Everytime I open my son's I have to restore from a backup. I've tried everything I know but it keeps doing it.

What is the problem???

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi butch

I'd be interested in knowing if there is any difference in the way you are opening them. For example, using the Start menu for one and double-clicking another. You may want to check the shortcut properties you are using to see if they are both running in compatibility mode (if they are not, set them to).

I'd also check that the MOney files are found in your Documents folder, rather than anywhere else (and especially NOT under c:\program files).

I have seen this error before, but I can't recall what the solution was, but I hope the above helps. You're looking for the differences between the two files, rather than differences in the contents possibly.

I am running Money 2006 with Windows 7. Installed fine and appears to run OK.

There is one feature that I have not been able to get working. I need to be able to manually download the .ofx files and put them through a custom processor before money loads the ofx file. In Windows 7, I cannot seem to get an option to save the file - instead I just have an open option and that launches money. In XP, there was a way to explicitly set the behavior for what happens when a file is downloaded - canot find a similar mechanism in Windows 7.

The MS knowledgebase article that talks about it (for XP and Vista) (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916273) is fine for XP but then has a different solution for Vista that is dependent on using Microsoft Accounting.

Any Ideas?

I just installed Ms Money on Windows 7 Home Premium. The problem I'm facing is that it lags as the cursor shows that the application is processing all the time. Please help.

Hi Naikey

not familiar with the problem you've got, but my first thought is whether the Money file is trying to go online or download quotes etc. Can you try running without any internet connection and see if it is quicker. I'd also try a repair on the file and also creating a new file - does this lag in the same way?

I've been running Money 2005 under both XP and Vista. I upgraded both machines to W7 a month ago, and Money worked fine. However, yesterday, I got a message on both machines "Microsoft Money Error Reporting has stopped working", and giving me the only option "close program".

It seems MS' last updates (9th and/or 11th December) have caused this. I've reported it, but has anyone else had the same?

Thanks for that, Glyn. I did try compatability mode, but no luck. However, I tried uninstalling, reinstalling and running the MS update (as administrator). This got Money started, but I still had no luck opening my files.

I tried running the Sample.mny file, but got an error message; I think it's because the default location is in Program Files. I copied it to a location in Documents, ran it from there, and after that my files run OK

I've just converted my WinXP machine to Win7. I've reinstalled MSMoney 2004 with no problem. When I start MSMoney, it starts up ok (plays audio entry, flashes EULA, etc.) but before I can select anything on the MSMoney task bar, it goes into a hung state. I've waited up to 30 minutes before killing it. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times and the same results. Any ideas?

Glyn Simpson said...

Are you running the program in compability mode? (right click on shortcut and select the compatibility options - can't exactly remember where they are under there, as not on Win7 at present)

Rob N said...

Yes, I've tried WinXP (SP2 and SP3) modes and it still hangs.

Glyn Simpson said...

Try renaming your file so it forces you to choose something else - you can then try and create a new file and see whether it's file related

Also, I'd try running as administrator (right click the icon)

Rob N said...

Thanks. It appears that I had two issues. I had to start MSMoney the first time as Administrator. All subsequent executions now do not go into a hung state. My second issue is that of the 3 .mny files that I have, the largest of the 3 causes the program to exit with an error. I've tried repairing the file, but MSMoney says it's corrupt. I try to restore the file from backup and get similar results. The file works perfectly fine on my laptop WinXP device where I installed MSMoney while I built the new Win7 device. I think I'll try recreating and copying the .mny and backup files from the WinXP device. Worst case, I'll have to start dividing the file up into subparts until I find the bad record(s).

Rob N said...

I went back to my WinXP device and ran a repair on the money file. No problems were found, but I took the output file and copied it to the Win7 device anyway. MSMoney on Win7 now works fine for that file. My original copy was obviously corrupted in some way. I'm good to go!!

I have a unique issue. I'm running Money 2005 on Win Pro 64 bit. It is using XP compatibility mode and has me set as the administrator. Everything works great except for invoicing.

I try to print an invoice to pdf and I get the invoice with no data in it. The Money Invoice Designer says "ActiveX component cannot create object" when I try to open it. I've tried downloading the DHTML editing component from Microsoft with no luck in a fix.

Any ideas? This is driving me crazy.

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi JayBah

certainly sounds like nothing I've heard before. My only thought is that whilst you are running a 64 bit version XP, you may also be running a 64 bit version of Internet Explorer which might not support the activeX component. If you have a 32 bit browser (I would expect it to be installed), see if you can get that to open with the invoice designer (how, I am not sure)

Nothing crazy about it. I tried Money 95 on Windows 7 a few months back, and i got it working quite easily.

I have an unnumbered version of Money for the UK (c)2004 which ran fine on Vista. When loading on Windows 7 (64) it won't open the file, says it is corrupted, but same file returned to the Vista machine has no problem. I have tried compatibility mode, running as administrator, running as XP sp2, sp3, vista sp2. None of them will allow me to open the file or the back up file. Money is a major part of our business as to historical reasons so it is vital i get that file open somehow on the new machine or I'll never be able to get rid of the dreadful Vista machine. Well, very frustrating, but I got there in the end.

First I removed the files from documents, uninstalled, reinistalled then ran as administrator. Still no download so started to let it set up a new file and about three screens in it did the download.

I then closed money. Moved my file into documents and renamed it to the slightly different name used by the program and got rid of the new set up. Relaunched Money and it failed again to open my file.

So, I used task manager to get out of money by stopping it. Then removed all the files from the Documents folder then relaunched Money.

When it tried to open its doc there was nothing there so I told it to open my Money file on the stick memory G: drive.

Lo and behold it opened it. I then backed it up into Documents as an mbf. Closed Money.

I removed the G: stick drive and launched Money again. It could not find the file so I asked it to restore the back up which it did while renaming it back to Money.mny and it wanted to save it in the G: drive but I forced it into Documents.

I then exited Money and relaunched and it opened the correct file from Documents.

The key to this, for whatever reason, in my particular case is using task manager to shut Money and loading from the stick drive.

Thank you for your help Glyn.

Glyn Simpson said...

Not knowing the version of Money means there could be a couple of solutions. If you're running Money 2005, then I would check if you have the patched version of Money (it will have a version ending 1105).

If you're wanting to copy an old file from one machine to another, I'd not use the backup and instead copy the MNY file over and just try to open that.

You can also try to create a new file - does this work okay (this is to establish whether it's an installation or file issue)?

Thanks for your response Glynn.

The version of Money is 2.0a (1991-1992) It loaded in his system ok from my remote hard disc but says it is incompatible with his system. When I tried to load it into his system from his original discs and run the set up that is when it says it does not recognise it. I will have to get the disc off him and see if My Vista system can run from his original disc or is the disc in trouble as his MSMONEY that I copied to my remote disc I did by a direct cable link copy from his win 98 hard disc to my remote disc.

Glyn Simpson said...

The incompaitibility could be down to the fact that it needs to run in 'compatibility mode'. See this article on compatibility mode for more information. You may need to run the setup program this way too.

If this doesn't work, on some versions of Windows 7 you can use XP Mode, which is a virtual machine within Windows 7. You might be able to run that version in there.

fossilised said...

Glyn,

Have tried again with compatibility set to win 98 and run as administrator. unfortunately it comes up with the message: "the version of the file is not compatible with the version of windows you are running.check your computer system information to see whether you need x86(32bit) or x64(64bit) version of the progranand then contact the s/w publisher.

Obviously the s/w being for an old win 98 pc at 32 bit assumes that it will not run on a 64 bit m/c. Or am I missing a trick somewhere.

Glyn, Once again thanks for your input however, not being a user of Money but helping someone else I am a little confused or being stupid. On looking at your site as to what he would actually need there does not appear to indicate a UK version and indicate them as US versions. Does this mean they work in Dollars only or does it handle multiple currencies? I am not sure what I am looking for and where to look for the right thing.

You further refer to free download. Are you referring to it being free as a product or is it just the down load that is free because it is a trial and then one has to activate and pay for a license.

Sorry if I am being a pain but think I need further advice and guidance in resolving my friends problem.

Geoff

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Geoff

Multiple currencies are supported. The fact that a product was designed for the US still allows it to handle GBP, Canadian Dollars or another currency. You can choose your 'base' currency as you wish.

The Sunset version is free. And by free, I mean you will not have to pay, ever, for it. However there is no support from Microsoft.

One thing you could try is to copy the complete contents of the CD to your hard drive, and install from there.

I would also go with the running as administrator option, but to do this, right click on the 'setup.exe' file and select the 'run as administrator' option.

I only have one annoying problem that I cannot find any answer to. When I installed the update to 1105 all the dates were then flipped to show in the US format, i.e. Month, day, year. This did not happen before when I installed 1105 update on my previous PC running on XP. I am using the UK keyboard setting(don't know what the UK keyboard EXT other option is by the way).
I cannot find any way to switch back to the UK date format of day, month, year. It's driving be nuts but at least I have it up and running I suppose - Accountz software, as a UK alternative was a nightmare and I abandoned it after a wasted day!
Help please.

Money inherits its date settings from Windows, so check in Control Panel->Clock, Language and Region and then 'Change the date, time and number format'. You can set the format to United Kingdom in there.#

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Jeff P

you should be able to run Money 2006 on Windows 7. If you're in the US, you could also upgrade it to the Money Sunset sku as well, should you want to.

Glyn

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi

the fact that it says it's upgrading the file may point to Money and your file being from differing versions.

If you right click on the msmoney.exe executable and select 'run as administrator' (can't remember if you need to hold shift or ctrl down whilst right clicking or not), and open Money. Don't open your file but create a new one in your documents area. This will at least establish if your file or Money is the issue.

If it's Money, then reinstall with admin privileges (which means using the 'run as administrator' trick above). If it's the file, the I'd first try another backup and secondly i'd ask if you have definitately got the correct version of Money installed for the file you have.

I understand that this is a common problem and that I need to update the version to v14.X.1105 however when I right click on Money and Run as Administrator and attempt to Update Now another error message appears.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Ben

the trick is also that you need to open a new file. Run the program as administrator and select File->New. This should then upgrade and sort it out.

I use Microsoft Money 2005 on my laptop with Vista. I just bought a new laptop with Windows 7. I installed Microsoft Money 2005 on it no problem. The problem comes when I try to restore a backup to transfer the files from my old laptop to the new one. I've created a backup file on my flash drive and tried doing a restore backup on the new laptop, but can't seem to get the file to load. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Anonymous. This is quite a common problem and is to do with an un-updated version of Money 2005. See this page

try creating a new file in Money first, to determine if it's a file or program issue

Bamboozled said...

Hello,

Not sure if this has been addressed already. I am using MS Money 2002 (UK) on Win7 Home Premium.

As when I used Win XP, I set the programme to automatically backup when closed. This causes an error message to pop up that this operation cannot be performed as well as other erros the wording of which I cannot recall now - effectively saying that the latest changes cannot be saved.

I have tried running the .exe in comp mode (Win XP) and made the Money file, Backup file and LRD file writeable (i.e. non Read Only). Not sure if I should be doing something else.

Any help will be much appreciated/

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi

this is familiar, but I've not heard of the error for maybe 5 or more years, and so my memory of it is hazy.

In the event of any "operation cannot be performed" errors, I would always recommend a repair on the file (on the tools menu).

Secondly, turn off auto backup and check it exits cleanly - the idea is to see if it's the saving of the backup which is the issue.

Thirdly, try saving to a new location (without compression, if you've got the option to do that).

And finally, make sure you're saving to somewhere like your 'My Documents' folder and not in 'Program Files'.

Don't forget, Money can save in multiple places, so check all of the file paths are valid.

Bamboozled said...

Hi Glyn,

Thanks for the response. A few points:

- I am not sure how to perform a repair. I can see the Tools menu but no command seems to be relevant. Can you provide more detail on the steps that need to be taken?

- I have never knowingly used compression (never noticed the option being there in the first place) so I doubt the problem relates to compression

- my Money file and backup file are inside a sub-folder of my "Documents"

- not sure where to look at to check if the paths are valid. Can you please explain?

- removing the auto-backup seems to have removed the problem (temporarily?) - will keep on checking and report back

One last thing - I have noticed that there was a lower chance of the error appearing if Money was left open for a bit of time (several minutes) and then closed, rather than open it, quickly add transactions etc. and then immediately close. Not sure if this gives any clues.

Will keep an eye on it and return with news.

Many thanks for your time and help

Hi Glyn
Am hoping you might be able to help.......I have read your blog and after 3 days finally managed to get ms money 2004 loaded onto a laptop and be able to open it!

However I cannot restore my back up file.........every time I try.....as soon as ihave put my password in ...it looks really promising then the programme just closes...

The old laptop has died and I desperately need to access my data again.

Hi Chris

try opening Money on it's own, rather than the file and see if you can create a new file.

If you can, then I would look on the File->Repair Money File (may be called something else on 2004, but it will be similar) and try running that against your file to see if it fixes it.

Any error messages at all?

Glyn

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Bamboozled

Repair is File->Repair money file

Backup settings are at tools->Settings and then select 'backup settings'. The compression options are in there. This is also the place to check that it is trying to save to valid locations

When Money closes down, it does a few more things when shutting down before it is fully closed. If you reopen during this time, you can get errors.

Hi Glyn. I have been running Money 2002 uk standard version which was incorporated with Microsoft works suite cd pre-installed for some years on a PC with the XP o/s, which has now crashed permanently. I have tried to restore my back up data file on a identical PC with the same XP o/s and version of money 2002 (both computers puchased together and are identical and spec is exactly the same), when I enter my password, prompt is saying "The password you entered is incorrect please try again".

I Have read previous posts and can never recall upgrading or updating my version of money 2002.

Grateful for any suggestions, as at moment I have come to a dead end, even tried on laptop with vista o/s ans coming up with same password issue.

Glyn Simpson said...

Weird one, that is. 2002 didn't have any oinline updates which change the structure of the database, so should just work.

If Money is working (but not on your file), try creating a new file and then looking at the Help->About screen to verify which version is actually installed. Works sometimes gave you a version later than you might have expected.

Also, are you installing a different country version to what you had before?

Glyn Simpson said...

I've published the article about invoices, but I am not sure of the answer on it, sorry. Hopefully someone else may provide a clue.

My only guess would be something to do with administrator mode - try running Money as an administrator and see whether it can find your custom invoices.

Hi Glyn,

I have been using MSMoney 2003 OEM for a while now but it has been giving me some problems so I have tried to upgrade to Sunset Edition.

However it can not read my datafile. It reports: "Money can't open this file because it was created with a different version of Money".

I believe this is to do with my OEM version being installed in the "New Zealand" language and the Sunset Version being USA language.

I have also found trial versions of 2003, 2004 and 2007 (all USA only language packs) but they all have exactly the same problem.

Are you aware of any work around?

Thanks

Hi Glyn,

Problems still persist. Now, every few days, it is not possible to enter any new transactions (get a message along the lines "The transaction cannot be entered"). I have to create a new file, restore from backup and continue.

Still I tend to backup manually before each exit, because the auto backup does not seem to work (99% of times when I close the program I get an error message popup "This operation cannot be performed")

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Rowan, yes, your thoughts are correct. You can't open a version of Money from a different regional version, so an NZ one can't be opened by the Sunset version, as that is a US version. You might have to go for the QIF export/import option (see this article). QIF export/import is time consuming, but a viable way forward.

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Bamboozled. I will have to assume you've previously done a repair/salvage on the file. If not, now's the time.

If, after running this you continually get problems, then perhaps it's prudent to consider exporting the data and then reimporting it into a new file.

From the sound of things, there is corruption in the file, and if a repair doesn't solve it, transaction export and import may be the cleanest way to go forward.

I've just responded to another poster on this article. It might be a reasonably short article (see here, but it can be time consuming.

Hello Glyn,
I just upgraded to a new Win7 64 bit desktop from my old XP desktop which came with Money 2002 Standard. When I installed it on the Win7 machine it installed fine but hangs up/freezes terribly once I am in the program. After several minutes of waiting I can perform functions again, but only for a matter of seconds (5-10) before the program freezes again. I have tried all the tricks listed on this page including creating a new Money file, "Run as administrator", "Run in Compatibility Mode (tried Win95, Vista, XP sp2 & 3) and also the "Compatibility troubleshooter." When I come to the end of the troubleshooter it tells me it is an incompatible application. Any ideas?

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi there

before you try and restore your backup, make sure you have the patch (see this page). Once you have the patch, you can try to either (a) use the MNY file straight off or (b) restore the backup.

In either case, put the file in the "my documents" or "documents" folder before starting the software with the file.

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Rick - have you tried a repair on the file at all? If you're using Windows 7 you could alternatively try Windows XP mode (however you need Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate).

rk said...

Thanks for your input. I tried to repair the file with the -s switch as well as the repair patch, but to no avail. If it helps anything I would say the problem is definitely program related as opposed to data file related, because it freezes regardless of what file I am working from. Even now while I am trying to create a new file it is freezing every step of the way. The program is locked solid (will not minimize/maximize, mouse cursor does not change for rollover effects, etc) for about 1 minute 10 seconds each time.
Unfortunately I am using Win7 Premium so I don't have the XP mode option. If I can't get this resolved, are there newer versions of Money that will open my 2002 data file? Thanks again.

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Rick

have you tried reinstalling the program? When you do so, try running the installation program as administrator too (right click on the setup program).

As for newer versions, all versions afterwards should open the file, so long as you use the same countries version (ie US->US and UK->UK, not US->UK).

If you're in the US, you could try the sunset edition which will open it (see here).

Glyn Simpson said...

Okay, try the following:
a) Start Money and select Help->About and check the version. If it's 11.0.something.1105, then you need to do nothing, you're patched.
b) If it's 11.0.something.730, then it is unpatched.
c) If it's unpatched, create a new file (File->New)
d) Close the program and then right click on the Money icon (if run as.. does not appear, hold down either Ctrl or Shift, can't remember which one) and then click it again. There will heopfully be a 'Run as administrator' option.
d) Select that option and I would expect, assuming you have an internet connection, that the patch starts downloading.

Note, the Money patch will be removed from the servers soon. I don't expect that it has already, so I would expect that this still works.

Hi Glyn,

I too have been EXTREMELY satisfied with Money 95 and have transactions dating back to 1992. On March 24th and July 15th you posted that you were able to run it successfully in Win 7 but unfortunately you did not mention if it was the 32 or 64 bit version. I have taken the plunge to a brand new desktop (which I haven't even received yet) with Windows 7 (64 bit) installed and I'm praying that I also will be successful. Can you please confirm the version of Win 7 you used. I apologize but I guess that was my long-winded way of asking if you would be pretty confident that my Money 95 will work in Win 7 (64bit). Thank you so much in advance for your guidance.

I am currently using Money Sunset on Windows 7 (64 bit). Money 2005 should work okay on it too (can't remember which version I tested it on, but is highly likely to have been the same version).

Note, as you're using Money 2005, I strongly urge you now to create a CD with the patched version. See the article I just put online. If the MS servers were to break tomorrow, i think it's unlikely they'll bother to restore them, so it's a job for now.

However when I leave my machine switched off for any length of time say overnight when i try to load Money i get the message 'money is not properly installed. Please try setup again.' backup wouldn't load and had to uninstall and reinstall programme & backup to get it going again. But tonight its done it again. I have no idea what is happening. Tried to look at Money by going past the error message, but all my backup previously loaded seems to have gone. Can you advise. I am not a computer geek, but a 50+ mum so please can you explain simply. Hope you can help otherwise I will have to look for an alternative programme, and I have no idea what is good and what is not.

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Chrissie

I would firstly check two things - the location of your data file and the location of the backups. As you have Windows 7, please ensure they are NOT in the same place as the program (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money) and are instead in your Users folder.

The easiest was to check the backups would be to open money, click on tools-settings and select the backup option (locations may be slightly different on Money 2002). The locations should be in c:\users\yourname.

If you find the money file out of place, move it into your 'documents' area and then double click on it to open it and see if it fixes the problem.

I have MS Money 2002. I recently upgraded my desktop and installed a clean version of Windows 7 (not an upgrade). I have 2 problems that are happening that I haven't found any answers for.

1. The program will not save my recently entered data. I ran a file repair that seemed to fix the issue but after a couple of days, it happened again.

2. The backup file becomes read only for some reason. I have it saved on a separate drive.

This has never happened before. I have never used the internet features of Money. Is the Sunset version worth upgrading to? I have data from the late 90's on here and I don't want to lose it.

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi - the saving could be down to permissions or the location of the MOney file. See this article about compatibility mode. You may need to run Money as an administrator (the article is for Vista, but applies for Windows 7 too).

Backups are normally read only. To use them, use File->Restore Backup if you have that option in 2002.

The sunset version will work if you have a US version of Money 2002 - it's worth a try if that is the case.

Hi Glyn,

Long time no see. Have not managed to sort my problems out. When closing MS Money, I get pop up windows telling that the operation cannot be performed.

Every few days, the whole things stops working. I cannot enter ant transaction as whenever I try to click the Enter button I get the same pop up window. I end up creating a brand new file, restoring my backup and start sort of afresh (I backup every time I finish working with Money somy backup is always as up-to-date) as it can be.

I have another question for you. I can see in my start-up entries this: MoneyStartUp10.0 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money\System\Activation.exe"

What is this? I have stopped the Money Express pop-up because it would not automatically update itself (it would update upon booting the PC only). Is the activation exe needed?

Glyn Simpson said...

If you're getting errors on exit, and your files are located in writeable areas of windows 7 (such as the \Users\\Documents folder), then it is possible that you've got corruption in your file. That would be the first area I'd look at in of fixing.

Not sure what the activation.exe is - can you disable it and see what happens?

I have been running Microsoft Money 2005 UK on Windows XP without problems. I have now purchased a new PC running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and a laptop running Windows Vista. As I had lost my original Money CD, I was fortunate to find a new sealed copy on ebay. The installation goes OK on the PC running Windows 7until the Money programme opens and I am confronted with a screen asking for a password. Likewise on the laptop running Windows Vista, the Money " home " screen appears for a split second before being replaced by the screen asking for a password. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can overcome this request for a password and actually get to use the programme ?

Hi,

click on file->new and create a new file. Once opened, hope that the update starts downloading. If it does, once it's all done and you've restarted twice, open your old file.

Afterwards, go to this page and make yourself a new installation disk.

Hi Glynn,

Like many others on this forum, I have recently bought a new PC which runs Windows 7 and I'm having great difficulty reading my
Money 2005 files from my old XP machine. I've uploaded Money 2005 (UK edition) from the original installation CD (which came as part of a Works bundle) and checked the version number - 11.0.something.730. The version on my old PC is ...1105. Consequently I've tried burning a new disc with the MNYCore file added as you have suggested . This loaded Money 2005 OK but it was still the old version. I've also opened the sample file and tried to update - MSN Money opens and appears to update, but the version number is still 730.

Do you have any suggestions, please?

Many thanks,

Peter

Glyn Simpson said...

hi Eddie

when you start Money, do not open your file but check out the version on help->about. The number should end with a 1105. If it doesn't, then open a new file and update the software (if it still works).

You will need to store your Money file in a location that is writeable. So if you're using Windows 7 or Vista, make sure it's in your Documents folder rather than any other location.

Glyn

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Peter

before you burnt the disk, did you check that the version of Money was running at 1105?

The disk burning technique has to be done after the update has applied and the instructions followed exactly, otherwise it may not work.

I'd recommend reopening a new file and seeing if Money will download it's update. You'll need to check you can open your own file before burning - i'd try it a couple of times to be sure, and then do the burn

Glynn, I tried downloading the 1105patch for Money 2005 UK as instructed but I was asked to sign on as Administrator when in fact I am the Administrator. Looking at previous posts, I would assume that the 1105 patch is no longer available. I have downloaded the Sunset Version of Money and am using. I managed to transfer files from Money 2005 UK Version but found that transaction details only include figures but not categories, splits, etc, and that some account information transferred was very basic and not as detailed as originally entered on Money 2005 UK. I am inclined to accept that I shall continue with the Sunset version and slowly re-enter the full details against the transactions and accounts that were transferred from Money 2005 UK. I am glad that I found this website and an very thankful for the information and suggestions provided.

Glyn Simpson said...

Hi Johnbull

yes, it's relatively easy. All of the data is in the .MNY file, so that's what you need to copy (on Windows 7, it will be your 'Documents' folder). However on the new machine, make sure you install the patch after installing the program, which you can download from Microsoft now (see this article for more information), as the basic install from your CD will not be the 1105 version of Money 2005.

Hi Phil

The Sunset version install and uninstall could have caused the issue. You could either reinstall the Money version you have (bearing in mind that you need the QFE patch which will also need to be downloaded), or alternatively see if http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/178.aspx helps you.
