Nationwide withdrawing support for Microsoft Money

The last full UK release of Microsoft Money was in 2005. Since then, Microsoft have carried out no development work on the software. In addition, Microsoft no longer offer any technical support on this product in the UK and this has significantly impacted on our ability to resolve customer queries relating to the software. Regrettably, we will be withdrawing the support service on our Internet Bank for Microsoft Money management software on 22 October 2009.

Remember you can still use our Internet banking service to view your statements, opt out of paper statements, pay bills and transfer your money instantly. You can also view and manage your credit card, mortgage and overdraft.

Non-activation version of Microsoft Money

Later this year, Microsoft will release versions of Money Plus Deluxe and Money Plus Home and Business that will not require online activation. This version will allow you to keep your Money files and transactional history but will not allow access to online services or premium services.

No further details on this are yet available, but I'll post announcements here as they occur.

Implications of the discontinuation

There are a lot of implications regarding the discontinuation of Microsoft Money. Such as 'what happens next', 'upgrade paths' etc.

Some FAQ's can be found on the moneymvps.org website:

In addition to these, a number of other questions or comments will be unclear. Above all, remember that even though the product may be discontinued, you can still use it. In January 2011, aggregated bank downloads and quotes are likely to be turned off, but most other features should continue to work.

Microsoft to discontinue Money??

Microsoft plans to stop selling Microsoft Money, its venerable, but not market-leading personal finance program, CNET News has learned.

The software maker has been notifying financial institutions and plans to announce the move to customers over the next 24 hours via a posting on its Web site and a notification in the software. Although Microsoft will stop selling the product at the end of June, it plans to support it through January 2011.

MSN Money Feed for UK fund

There is currently a problem with downloading fund prices from the MSN Money servers for Microsoft Money users. The problem is on the MSN Money site, which has not updated the fund prices since the site upgrade on May 8th.

Microsoft are aware of the problem. A recent communication to someone who had seen the problem and contacted support was:

...We have already determined that this is a consistent issue with the servers in the MoneyCentral website that needs to be worked on, I will pass this situation
to higher levels of support to look for a resolution...

So, rest assured it is known about

Update 25 May: got back from a few days away, and have a few messages from users saying it is fixed.

Money 2005 patch download available again

The Money 2005 Service Outage as reported earlier in the week is now fixed.

I received an email around 11pm BST (22:00 GMT) last night informing me. I've also heard from a couple of people confirming this is the case.

If you've been stuck at version 730, you should now try and restart Money and let the download occur. Once done, you may wish to consider making a CD as detailed in FAQ Article 630, BUT make sure you test it if you do!!!.

Thanks for all the comments and questions during the outage. It made the page reporting the problem one of my busiest ever.

Creating a self contained installation of Money 2005 with the 1105 patch

I've just put up a post on http://moneymvps.org with some instructions on how to create a self contained installation of Money 2005 onto CD, so you never need to rely on the Microsoft servers to deliver the patch update again. This fix can be read in FAQ Article 630.

Credit is to Jean-Paul in the French money newsgroup who came up with the solution. I've had feedback that it works on all language versions of Money 2005.

It is probably not legal to share the files that are required from a patched version. You may need to wait until Microsoft sorts out the problem with downloading before performing these instructions.

Updating Money 2005 - Service Outage

I've been informed that currently upgrading Money 2005 from its 'out of the box' version to the patched version (from version 14.0.x.0730 to version 14.0.x.1105) is currently experiencing problems, and so these upgrades don't currently work.

Microsoft is working on the problem. In the meantime you'll probably not be able to open your Money file if you've just done a clean install and need to use an existing file.

As far as I know, it is affecting all regions.

Update: 14 May - I'm hearing that the fix should be ready later in the week, however this is not guaranteed.

16 May: Hearing this morning that things seem to be working again

Microsoft Money on Windows 7

I recently put Windows 7 in a virtual machine, and installed Money 2005 on it. I am pleased to say that it all seemed to work successfully. However, it was just Money 2005 (plus the patch) on a 32 bit version of Windows, and I've not tried any other versions.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has tested other versions of Money, and whether they have had success or failure with them.

As far as I see, Windows 7 operates in the same way as Vista does with Microsoft Money. If this is the case, then all versions of Money should be okay.

Glyn

PS. Thanks for all the well wishers regarding my job situation. I'm pleased to say that I start a new one on Monday 2nd February :-)

moneymvps.org temporarily out of action

Just a heads-up that moneymvps.org has been experiencing difficulties today, and isn't quite working properly at present.

Seems to just hang and then throw an error. However, people are on the case and hopefully normal service will be resumed shortly.

When it comes back, I hope it'll be faster, as I've taken the time to put on a few code updates. If it keeps erroring beyond 10pm GMT (2pm PST) then it'll probably be the morning by the time I fix it.

Money 2010 Tracking

A couple of days ago, I created FAQ Article 604, which is to track the status of Money 2010. The timelines/tracking pages are popular on my website, so it seemed useful to create one for this potential product.

As Money 2009 was never released, we're moving to the next iteration of the software. The naming may not be Money 2010, given that Money 2008 was actually Money Plus. They may, if a release happens, decide to go back to year number, maybe not. I've no idea on how Microsoft decide to name ay product so Money Plus+, Money 18 etc. could all be valid.

One thing that will happen this year is that the 2 year online services feature of some of the Money Plus early adopters will expire, and without either a new product to move to, or an extension to this feature, people using this version of Money will start to lose functionality. The expiration will start around the start of August for those who downloaded a copy, and towards the end of August for those who bought a product from a retail store when it first came out (Note: if you bought Money Plus later than this, your expiry will be later - 2 years after the first activation).

Whether 2010 comes out is, at this stage, a mystery - this posting is not an indication of that. However the expiration of Money Plus is not a mystery - I keenly wait for the news to come out, in its usual manner.

Happy new year!

Happy new year to all my readers.

I've been a bit quiet over the last few months - I no longer have a job and am now seeking out new opportunities. I've seen it coming, but I've tried to focus on that a bit more than Microsoft Money. I'll continue looking until I find something, but as I now am stuck at home, I'll have some more time to devote to the site (I can't search for jobs all day!)

Over the next few weeks, whilst away from work (I hope to be employed again soon), I've got some plans to work on updates to the US product pages on my website http://moneymvps.org/ - these are occasionally timing out due to problems connecting to Amazon Web Services. I've also had a couple of questions which I'm planning on turning into short articles (I put one on today - When to use subcategories).

I hope 2009 brings great things to you all - health, happiness and your wishes.

Glyn
